Amiga Magazine Crisis
by Mark Klocek
The September issue of Amiga Power was the final issue from this Amiga
games only magazine. It finished with only about 18000 readers, and was
rapidly becoming no more than a very expensive pamphlet.
I believe Amiga Action and Amiga Shopper will soon follow as over the
last few months they too have had the expensive pamphlet syndrome and
they are now getting harder and harder to find.
Amiga Shopper has stopped taking subscriptions and can only be got by
reserving issues from news agents or WHSmith type places. I beleive as
soon as the last subscription is up they will kill it.
This leaves only four Amiga magazines (The One closed may moons ago) they
are Amiga Format, CU Amiga, Amiga Computing and Amiga User International.
I cannot comment on Amiga User International as I it is quite hard to
find sometimes. However Amiga Format, CU Amiga and Amiga Computing all
sell about 40,000 issues a month, which certainly is a far cry from the
142,000 that Amiga Format enjoyed in December 1993 and the 112,000 CU
Amiga used to get at the same time. Amiga Computing has sustained the
least losses with a drop from around 58,000 in June 1993.
It certainly shows the movement away from the Amiga, though it has to be
said those who move to comms usually stop purchasing Amiga magazines as
up to date information can usually be found here as well. This may
account for maybe 2000-3000 of the people.
Recently a new magazine has opened up called Amiga Review, more
information as we get it. Also can someone tell us how Amiga Pro died
and when was the last issue?
The Amiga magazine market is rapidly fading away (and getting more
expensive) which is certainly yet more cause for concern for all loyal
Amiga owners.
